What is Light the World?

Light the World is the annual Christmas initiative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It invites everyone to celebrate the birth and life of Jesus Christ and follow His example of caring and serving others.

What is a Giving Machine?

The Giving Machine is one component of Light the World. These unique vending machines provide a convenient, fun, and memorable way for the public to give to those in need.

What are the payment options? 

Giving Machines accept debit/credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express) via tap or swipe (chip readers do not work) and mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay, and so on). In some countries, both cards and cash are accepted.

In 2017, the Giving Machine was born in response to a heartfelt question: “Can serving others be instant, fun, and memorable?” Since then, Light the World Giving Machines have appeared in cities across the globe, capturing the attention of media, public officials, respected nonprofit organizations, business leaders, other faiths, and the public. In the past few years, hundreds of thousands of people have donated over US$33 million in goods and services to care for those in need—around the block or around the world.

During the Christmas season, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites people everywhere to light the world by lifting and serving others in small and simple ways. One unique, fun, and memorable aspect of the Light the World initiative is the popular Giving Machines. These customized vending machines allow the public to donate necessary products and services to those in need worldwide. Giving Machine items often include food, clean water, medical care, clothing, education support, hygiene kits, and even livestock, such as chickens, goats, pigs, and beehives.

One hundred percent of every donation is given to the participating nonprofit organizations to purchase and deliver the donated item. This happens because The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints covers all Giving Machine operating costs.
